It’s a legacy that began 32 years ago when a 15 500 acre piece of land was purchased in the middle of KwaZulu-Natal by Trevor Shaw. He named the area Zulu Nyala after the buck that is abundant in the area, but rare elsewhere in the country, and built lodges for visitor accommodation to the reserve. 10 years later he sold most of the land and all the lodges, except for a small cottage, which he subsequently built into a magnificent 12-room lodge. In the last 20 years, Shaw acquired land in the adjoining areas to the lodge and developed what is today known as Zulu Nyala – 4 500 acres of reserve with more than 40 species of game and other animals. Today the Zulu Nyala Group consists of the original Game Lodge, the Heritage Safari Lodge in Hluhluwe (KwaZulu-Natal), Country Manor in Fourways, Johannesburg, as well as Trevor Shaw’s Shaw Diamonds.
